Botox®

Q. What is Botox®?

A. Botox® is a natural purified protein. It has been proven to be a safe, reliable, and effective treatment for reducing wrinkles since 1982. Originally Botox® was used to treat a nervous eye twitch condition. A side benefit to the injection was a significant reduction or even elimination of wrinkles in the treated area, and now the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery ranks Botox® as the most popular of all medically administered cosmetic procedures.

Q. How does Botox® work?

A. When you frown, smile, squint, or use any other common facial expression, your muscles contract under your skin. When you have Botox® injected directly into these tiny muscles, it blocks nerve impulses to the injection area and prevents further muscle contractions. This relaxes the muscle and smoothes the skin over that muscle group. In some cases, with repeated treatments, the wrinkle can actually disappear. The effects of Botox® are confined to the treatment sites: It does not travel through your body.

Q. Should I use Botox®?

A. Botox® may make sense for you if you'd like to smooth out horizontal forehead lines, frown lines between your eyebrows, and crow's feet around your eyes. However, if you are pregnant, ask your physician if you should get Botox® injections.
